Gardaí found it easier to mislead than be truthful – Ó Laoghaire
Commenting on the release of Crowe Horwath report into False Breath Tests, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD said:
“The scale of this scandal is absolutely incredible. False tests numbers have gone from 1 million to 1.5 million to 1.9 million in a matter of months.
“It is telling that the chair of the Policing Authority Josephine Feehily effectively said it was apparently easier for Gardaí to give false information than tell the truth in relation to this is issue.
“That would certainly to me indicate a culture of fear amongst rank and file Gardaí and also reveals there was pressure, direct or indirect, that was at the very least implied.
“It’s not unfathomable to think such practices are confined to this issue alone. There is speculation that it is very likely checkpoints were also recorded that did not take place.
“It is very clear a permanent solution is required, coupled with ongoing reform of culture and more powers for the Policing Authority and GSOC.
“Discipline is not the only issue; there has to be accountability.
“This includes senior Gardaí who were aware of, but ignored these practices.
“The Acting Garda Commissioner needs to outline how he intends to progress that.”
