Taoiseach’s €5 million spin unit goes into overdrive on water charges refunds – Adams

3 November, 2017 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has said “the Taoiseach’s €5 million spin unit has gone into overdrive in a pathetic attempt to blame Sinn Féin for the political dithering of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil on water policy”.

Teachta Adams said;

“This would have been dealt with by now had Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil not delayed the Water Charges Bill 2017 on numerous occasions. This is the cause of the hold-up.

“In an ill-conceived PR move, the Government is now attempting to pit the imperatives of refunds for citizens and vital democratic oversight of legislation against each other.

“This is important legislation. It is about much more than refunds.

“The Bill does not include provision for a referendum on public ownership of water charges, fair treatment for those on group water schemes, or robust water conservation measures.

“This is reason why, after months of delays, an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar wants to rush it through the Dáil without the appropriate scrutiny.”
