Sinn Féin PMB an opportunity for all parties to unite and stand up for tenants - Eoin Ó Broin TD
- EÓB Private Rental motion Speech (355 KB)
Speaking ahead of the Dáil debate tonight on a Sinn Féin motion on standards in the private rented sector, Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson called on “All political parties to unite and stand up for tenants’ rights.”
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“Sinn Féin’s Motion tonight calls on Minister Murphy to set out, as a matter of urgency, a plan for ensuring compliance with standards in the private rented sector. It calls for increased inspections, increased resources for Councils, an NCT type certification system for landlords and a review of penalties for those who break the law.
“It is an opportunity to show the electorate that “new politics” can mean that political parties are able to put their differences aside and act in the common good.
“What stronger signal could we as public representatives send to rogue landlords and to those living in substandard accommodation tonight than to speak with one voice, demanding better standards.
“The government can no longer fail to act. It must ensure that all those living in the private rented sector have a safe and secure place to call home.”
