Morgan welcomes publication of Work Permits Bill
Sinn Féin spokesperson on the Enterprise, Trade and Employment Arthur Morgan T.D. has welcomed the 'long-overdue' publication of the Employment Permits Bill and said that it would have to be fully scrutinised to ascertain to what extent the legislation will improve the rights and welfare of migrant workers.
Deputy Morgan said:
"I welcome the publication of this legislation. It is a pity that we had to wait until the last week of this Dáil term for this Bill to be published. This means that it wont be discussed until the autumn.
"Sinn Féin have been to the fore in seeking reforms to the work permit system with the aim of reducing the possibility of migrant workers being subject to abuse from unscrupulous employers. Our chief demands were for the work permit to be granted to the employee rather than the employer and for substantial increases in penalties for non compliance with work permits legislation. This Bill will have to be fully scrutinised to ascertain to what extent these demands have been met. Sinn Féin will undoubtedly be putting forward amendments to improve this legislation when it comes before the Dáil." ENDS
