Sinn Féin meets with women affected by mesh implants

8 November, 2017 - by Órlaithí Flynn

Today Sinn Féin MLA's Órlaithí Flynn and Caoimhe Archibald met with a group representing women from across the north suffering serious side effects from vaginal mesh implants.

Speaking after the meeting Caoimhe Archibald MLA said:

"Today we met with representatives of women who have had mesh implants and who continue to suffer serious side effects.

"The physical and emotional pain they have had to endure is terrible. It’s important that the health and wellbeing needs of women affected by mesh implants are met as a matter of urgency.”

Órlaithí Flynn MLA added:

"The groups once again raised a number of issues and concerns around the use of mesh implants which we will raise directly with the Department of Health.

“We have demanded that the department take a serious look at this issue and carry out an urgent reassessment of all women who have experienced these complications and that these women receive the appropriate treatment as soon as possible.

“My party colleague in the South, Louise O’Reilly TD has raised the issue with the Minister for Health Simon Harris. She has called on the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Department of Health to immediately conduct a review into how many patients received a transvaginal mesh implantation as part of a healthcare procedure.

"Sinn Féin is calling for a moratorium on the use of surgical mesh implants and a public inquiry into the use of surgical mesh implants."
