Leo Varadkar is for a mé féin society - Gerry Adams TD

10 November, 2017 - by Gerry Adams

Commenting on Taoiseach Leo Varadkar speech to the Fine Gael National Conference tonight, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD said;

"Leo Varadkar is for a mé féin society.

"Where is the prosperity and opportunity for those left behind by the right-wing policies of Fine Gael - the more than 8,000 homeless citizens, the hundreds of thousands on hospital treatment waiting lists or those struggling to get by on low wages? Where is the opportunity and prosperity for those weighed down by the cost of living?

"The Taoiseach has decided that he is not going to address the deep crises in the public services on which ordinary people rely. Instead, he favours tax-cuts which disproportionately benefit the better-off.

"The real message behind Leo's 'Republic of Opportunity' is - do not look to this government  if you wan't an affordable home, or access to timely healthcare or a fair and sustainable economy."

Regarding the Taoiseach's comments on the North, Mr Adams added;

"Teachta Varadkar's comments on the political situation in the North fell far short of what is needed. He has a duty to uphold the Good Friday Agreement and the rights agenda. It is disappointing that he failed to do that."
