‘Auditor document echoes need for integrity in government’ - Kearney
Integrity must be at the heart of government if it is to command public confidence, Sinn Féin's Declan Kearney has said.
The South Antrim MLA was commenting after the Auditor General launched new guidelines on avoiding bribery and corruption in the public sector.
Declan Kearney said: “We welcome the Auditor General’s intervention on this issue, which is obviously of huge public interest given the RHI controversy and other financial scandals associated with the DUP, which contributed to the collapse of the Stormont institutions.
“This guidance echoes a Sinn Féin document which we launched at the beginning of the year detailing a number of proposals for ensuring the highest standards of integrity in government.
“Our proposals deal with a number of issues including political donations, lobbying, conflict of interests, and whistleblowing.
“Given what we have witnessed over the past year and how public confidence in our political institutions was undermined, pro-active and robust initiatives are required in the fight against corruption, incompetence and malpractice to ensure integrity is firmly at the heart of the political process."
