Ulster University Fiasco highlights need for openness and transparency

1 July, 2005

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, West Belfast MLA Michael Ferguson commenting on the publication of the report into University of Ulster vice chancellor Professor Gerry McKenna has said that the entire episode highlights the need for genuine openness, transparency and accountability in the operation of all third level institutions.

Mr Ferguson said:

"Staff and students not just at the Ulster University but at all third level institutions deserve genuine openness and transparency in the operation of all third level institutions.

"This entire episode from the issues identified in this report through to the legal gagging orders only highlight the accountability deficit that exists with our universities.

"Universities play a vital role both as educational centres for our young people and in research that can benefit our economy and our society. They need to move out of the dark ages and adopt good practice models that befit the 21st century." ENDS
