Ferris slams cuts in price for sugar beet

4 July, 2005

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture Martin Ferris TD has slammed the cut in the price being paid to farmers for sugar beet. He has also claimed that the new EU regime governing the sector is designed to destroy the Irish sugar sector.

Deputy Ferris said: "The cut of over €100 per tonne in the price for beet will have devastating effects on the Irish sector. Coupled with the proposed cuts in the quota and other changes to the quota regime, this will spell disaster for the industry and threatens to destroy the 500 jobs in processing, and drive the 3,700 growers out of production. It is clear in fact that this is the intent of the changes. I am calling on Minister Coughlan to ensure that these moves are opposed and reversed at EU level and that the Government institute a long-term strategy to preserve the sugar beet sector." ENDS
