€30 million must be used to secure future viability of Post Office Network – Nolan
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Rural and Community Development Carol Nolan TD has called on the Government to ensure that the €30 million announced for the Post Office Network will be used to sustain the network into the future.
Teachta Nolan said:
“I welcome the announcement yesterday of €30 million for the development of the post office network.
“However, it is not clear at present how much of this funding will be directed towards the future sustainability of post offices as opposed to other initiatives.
“The future sustainability of the post office network must be the key priority for the investment of this funding.
“Unfortunately for some post offices, this additional funding comes too late to save them but the Government must now set out a plan to save as many post offices as possible.
“I am calling on the Government to immediately commit to the implementation of the Kerr Report and to set out an implementation plan for this.
“Clarity must also be given in relation to the terms of the loan sought by the Government and any possible implications of this for post offices.
“I intend to raise this matter with the Minister in order to clarify both the terms of the funding and the plan in place to ensure that the maximum number of post offices can be protected from closure.”
