Taoiseach’s defence of Tánaiste ‘not credible or acceptable’ – McDonald
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has said “the Taoiseach’s continued defence of Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald is not credible or acceptable”.
Teachta McDonald continued;
“The Taoiseach says he still has confidence in Frances Fitzgerald, despite the fact that she has refused to bring clarity to her actions regarding the malicious legal strategy constructed by the Garda Commissioner’s legal team to destroy the reputation of Sergeant Maurice McCabe.
“He persists with the line that the Tánaiste had no prior of knowledge of this vicious legal strategy despite the fact that the email, outlining this strategy, was sent to Deputy Fitzgerald three days before the cross examination of Sgt McCabe at the O’Higgins Commission.
“The Taoiseach continues to defend the Tánaiste against an allegation nobody has made against her – that she played some role in the formulation of the strategy. Nobody is contending that.
“What is being contended is that the Tánaiste, while having knowledge of the malign legal strategy being directed by her subordinate, allowed a brave and honourable Garda whisteblower to go before a Commission of Investigation for cross examination and that she did nothing, despite her commitments, to protect that whistleblower.
“This calls into question the Tánaiste’s competence, judgement and indeed her honour. It calls into question her fitness to remain in office.
“In the scramble to protect the second most senior member of his government, the Taoiseach also has made a number of inaccurate statements in the Dáil.
“He cannot continue to express confidence in Teachta Fitzgerald while these very serious questions hang over her unanswered.”
