'Cuts and inequality undermine health transformation' - Sheehan

1 December, 2017 - by Pat Sheehan

The best way to pursue the required transformation of our health service is through a sustainable Executive based on equality and an end to Tory cuts, Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has said. The party’s health spokesperson was commenting after attending a discussion on "Transforming health in a political vacuum" in the Mac, Belfast. He said: “Sinn Féin wants to be in Government to continue delivering the transformation of the health and social care services. “But the challenges facing health are not a result of the collapse of the institutions. Challenges facing the health system have been worsening for years and many of them are the same problems being faced by health services elsewhere in these islands.

“Michelle O’Neill prioritised transformation in health and has set a clear direction of travel for transformation to begin in her Delivering Together plan.

"It’s important that the department for health continue to work on transformation that is consistent with Delivering Together, particularly the need to co-design services in partnership with service users and HSC staff.

“Sinn Féin have been clear from the outset that transformation requires proper investment to be successful. Ongoing Tory austerity remains a serious obstacle to this.

“Unfortunately the SDLP sought to use-what was otherwise an important discussion on transformation-to try to score cheap political points, but they refuse to explain how health transformation would be assisted by an Executive that is unsustainable due to the denial of rights and within the context of continued Tory austerity.”
