GFA must be protected in Brexit negotiations - Anderson

4 December, 2017 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the Good Friday Agreement and the rights of citizens in the north must be protected in order for the Brexit negotiations to move forward.

Speaking from Brussels, Martina Anderson said:

"The ongoing Brexit negotiations are at a critical stage and it is vital that the Good Friday Agreement in all its parts is protected, together with the rights of Irish citizens.

"Sinn Féin are engaging with the Irish and British governments, our leadership has met with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and here in Brussels I have been in contact with the European Parliament's Brexit Coordinator and members of the Brexit steering group.

"We have made it clear from the beginning of this process that what is required is for the north to secure special status within the EU.

"This means the north remaining in the Customs Union and the single market.

"That would provide the best protection for the Good Friday Agreement and the rights of citizens.

"We cannot have a situation where a minority are allowed to trample over the rights of the majority in the north who voted to remain in the EU."
