Fearon welcomes Austrian decision on marriage equality

5 December, 2017 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin equality spokesperson Megan Fearon has welcomed a decision from the Austrian Supreme Court that will see lesbian and gay couples having the right to marry from 2019.

Speaking after the Austrian Supreme Court ruled that the current law in Austria violates the principle of non-discrimination Megan Fearon said:

“News that marriage equality will be introduced in Austria from 2019 is to be welcomed.

“This progressive and forward-thinking step will bring Austria into line with many other European nations, including the south of Ireland, Germany, France, Britain and Spain.

"The denial of the right to marriage equality in the north of Ireland by the DUP, facilitated by the British government is discriminatory, as it is available everywhere else on these islands.

“It’s disgraceful that a gay or lesbian couple can get married in Dundalk but are denied that right just six miles up the road.

“Sinn Féin believes in and will continue to stand up for equality, respect, recognition and rights for all citizens."
