Sinn Fein condemns Department of Education Nomination Process to Education Boards

7 July, 2005

Sinn Fein Education Spokesperson Michael Ferguson has said that the current
policy of the Department of Education to nominate or rubberstamp an
un-elected majority of members to Education and Library Boards is
unacceptable.

Michael Ferguson said,

" It is completely unacceptable for the Department of Education to determine
the membership of Education Boards or rubberstamp membership of boards.

It is crucial that we democratise these boards and that the decision making
process lies in the hands of those elected to act in the best interests of
our children which is clearly not the case at the moment.

The current un-elected representation on the Boards allows the Department to
force through cuts in services and resources that reduce the quality of
learning and teaching.

I would take the opportunity to call upon all of those un-elected board
members how ever well meaning they are not to support any more cuts in
services or redundancies and to join with us in demanding that the
Government get Real with Education and invest in a Real Budget that supports
education and learning." ENDS
