Ní Chuilín - Safety in tower block homes must be paramount

7 December, 2017 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson Carál Ní Chuilín has said safety in tower block homes must be made a priority in the future, following a meeting with the Housing Executive today.

The North Belfast MLA said:

“The tragedy of Grenfell Towers in London raised the question of safety in tower block homes.

“Sinn Féin have campaigned extensively for additional safety measures for tower block homes, and especially for installation of sprinkler systems and the maintenance of a concierge service

“In an independent briefing to the Housing Executive today nine recommendations were made to improve safety in the 33 tower block homes across the six counties.

“I welcome the fact that two of these recommendations, concerning sprinkler systems and maintaining concierge services as a matter of safety, have been recommended and will be discussed at future meetings at the Board of the Housing Executive.

“Safety is paramount for citizens living in high-rise homes, and these recommendations will go some way in improving existing safety measures and procedures.”
