Martin Kenny TD welcomes new Hen Harrier scheme

11 December, 2017 - by Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Kenny TD welcomed the announcement that the Department is putting a new hen harrier scheme in place to support farmers with designated land as hen harrier habitat.

Deputy Kenny said;

“The thousands of farmers around the country who have had their land designated as hen harrier habitat have been seeking recognition and compensation for years to no avail.

“Therefore today’s announcement is very welcome and will hopefully go some way to compensating farmers mainly on marginal and mountain-type land who have had their lands designated and cannot farm their land to its full potential.

“While the level of compensation being offered in this new support scheme has yet to be tested, I understand that some farmers could receive up to €8,000 for larger areas.

“The €25 million set aside for the scheme would deliver an average of €5,000 per farmer when the 20% administrative cost is deducted. Of course, farmers are always wary of headline numbers being presented as potential payments, as from past experience, they usually receive considerably less when terms and conditions are applied.

“Sinn Féin has campaigned for years to get due recognition and compensation package put in place for the hen harrier farmers and this announcement is a very welcomed development.”
