Government failing to act to enforce minimum standards in the private rented sector - Eoin Ó Broin TD
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has called on the Minister for Housing to outline what action he has taken to ensure that the minimum standards apply to properties in the private rented sector are being enforced.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“Six weeks since the RTÉ investigates programme 'Nightmare to Let' was aired, and five weeks after a Sinn Féin motion on standards in the private rented sector was passed there has still been no action.
“A casual browse through online accommodation advertising platforms throws up numerable properties that appear to be in breach of minimum standards.
“On bedroomed properties advertised for €400 a month with four bunkbeds cramped into a single room.
“Other properties advertised for €350 a month with beds in the kitchen. The Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2017 2 (1) states that:
In these Regulations-
“'habitable room' means a room used for living or sleeping purposes but does not include a kitchen having a floor area of less than 6.5 square metres"
“These are the properties that are advertised publicly. It is anyone’s guess as to what is being offered to people via social media sites.
“Unfortunately due to the lack of supply in the private rented sector and the rising costs many feel like they have no option but to cram into and pay extortionate amounts for substandard accommodation.
“The motion which was passed in the Dáil last month called on the Minister to for Housing to set out a plan for ensuring compliance with minimum standard regulations in the private rented sector.
“I have written to the Minister for Housing, the Deputy CEO of Dublin City Council Brendan Kenny and Rosalind Carroll from the Residential Tenancies Board articulating my concerns and enquiring as to what has been done in the past month.
“Tenants are at a distinct disadvantage in the rental market and at least the minimum standards that landlords are obliged to adhere to must be enforced.
