‘Breastfeeding campaign should be reinstated’ - Gildernew

21 December, 2017 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has called for the re-instatement of the Public Health Agency’s Breastfeeding Awareness Programme.

The campaign ended earlier this year when departmental funding was cut but Michelle Gildernew said it was needed to increase the numbers of mothers choosing to breastfeed.

She commented: "There is a clear need to build public awareness of breastfeeding.  The island of Ireland has the lowest rate of breastfeeding in the EU and this needs to be addressed.

"I and my Sinn Féin colleagues have engaged with both the PHA and the Department of Health on this issue and have consistently called for the funding cut to the PHA Breastfeeding Awareness programme to be reversed.

"This is campaign is essential if we are to improve our levels of breastfeeding.

"The PHA campaign will be central to raising awareness amongst expectant mothers, and indeed wider society, of the benefits of breastfeeding to both mother and baby."
