Minister must seek urgent clinical update on cardiac care at UHW - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin TD for Waterford Deputy David Cullinane has called on Minister Simon Harris to immediately publish a report from the National Clinical Programme examining cardiac services at UHW as soon as is possible.
Deputy Cullinane has contacted Minister Harris today outlining his concern at the continued closure of the single Cath Lab at UHW and the impact this has on patient safety and intervention wait times. Deputy Cullinane has also been in contact with senior consultants at UHW.
Speaking today Deputy Cullinane said:
"I am extremely concerned at the continued closure of the single Cath Lab at UHW. While this is unavoidable it reinforces the danger of operating from a single Lab and it being a single point of failure.
"This is not the first time in recent months the single Lab has temporarily closed. It results in cancellation of intervention work and all emergency cases transferred to Cork.
"The case for a second permanent Lab at UHW is unassailable. The deployment of a temporary mobile Lab has dramatically reduced diagnostic wait times. However those diagnosed as needing a medical intervention remain on a waiting list and this list has mushroomed in recent months.
"This is because the mobile Lab is not equipped to carry out interventional work and as such this can only be done from the single permanent Lab. The closure of this Lab is further proof that a second Lab is vital to ensure patient safety and control wait times.
"I have made contact with Minister Harris today requesting that he seek an urgent update from the National Clinical Programme who are currently examining cardiac services at UHW. He should request a clinical report and act on their recommendations."
