Reappointment of Conor Skehan to Housing Agency ‘hard to understand’ - Eoin Ó Broin TD

5 January, 2018 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has said that the decision by Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy to reappointment Conor Skehan to the chair of the Housing Agency is ‘hard to understand’.

Dr. Skehan has been embroiled in controversy recently for his factually incorrect and deeply hurtful comments about family homelessness.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

“The decision by Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy to reappoint Conor Skehan to the chair of the Housing Agency is hard to understand.

“Conor Skehan has significant expertise in housing policy and he has contributed positively to our ongoing housing policy debate. However, his recent comments about homeless families ‘gaming the system’ crossed an important line.

“Not only were his comments factually incorrect, they were deeply hurtful to families living in emergency accommodation. They were also disrespectful to the hard working staff in Council homeless sections.

“The Dublin Regional Homeless Executive have made it clear that there is no evidence to support Conor Skehan’s controversial remarks. Minister Murphy has also distanced himself from the comments.

“However to now reappoint Conor Skehan to the chair of the Governments housing policy advice body is a bad decision that will undermine the public credibility of the Housing Agency.

"It suggests that Minister Murphy may in fact support Conor Skehan’s controversial views.

"Minister Murphy should reconsider this ill though out decision and appoint a different chair without delay.”
