Minister Ross has failed to deliver on Garda Corps commitment – Imelda Munster TD
Sinn Féin’s spokesperson for Transport, Imelda Munster TD, had today criticised Minister for Transport Shane Ross and Minister for Justice Charles Flanagan for failing to deliver on a commitment to increase Garda Traffic Corps personnel by 10% in 2017.
Deputy Munster said:
“I have raised this matter on many occasions with Minister Ross, and he has said that he is committed to increasing the personnel numbers in the Traffic Corps. However, as is often the case with the Minister, this has proved to be mere lip service.
"Last year Minister Ross gave assurances that the numbers in the service would increase by 10% during 2017.
"This increase has failed to materialise, despite repeated assurances from the Minister that though delayed, the increase would certainly come about in 2017. It is now 2018 and nothing has been done.
“The Traffic Corps had in the region of 1200 members before the economic crash. In September 2017 there were 631 members. This is simply not good enough.
"The Minister can legislate as much as he likes for traffic safety measures, but if there is no one to enforce these laws they are pointless.
“I have written to both Ministers today seeking an explanation as to why a clear commitment has been broken, and I intend to pursue the issue as soon as the Dáil resumes next week."
