Families must not be forgotten in Carillion closure – Ni Chuilin

15 January, 2018 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson, Carál Ní Chuilín MLA, has said the welfare of families living in Housing Executive homes must not be forgotten, following the collapse of British construction giant, Carillion.

Carál Ní Chuilín said:

“The collapse of Carillion has placed hundreds of workers in deep uncertainty about the future of their employment, and especially those employed under Housing Executive contracts with the firm.

“Heating and general maintenance for thousands of citizens and families in Housing Executive homes is provided through Carillion contracts.

“The protection of those employed through these contracts, and crucially the families living in homes dependent on this essential maintenance, must be the priority for the Housing Executive in the immediate future.

“There are also broader questions for the Housing Executive to answer about the extent of their contractual relationships with Carillion, even as the firm repeatedly faced financial ruin in recent years.

“The welfare and livelihoods of families in social housing must not be dependent on the financial position of a British construction giant.

“I have contacted the Housing Executive to arrange a meeting in order to raise these issues with the relevant officials.”
