Sinn Féin is ready for repeal campaign – Louise O’Reilly TD
Sinn Féin Repeal the Eighth Campaign spokesperson Louise O’Reilly has welcomed An Taoiseach’s announcement this evening regarding the proposed referendum to repeal the eighth amendment.
O’Reilly reiterated her party’s stance that a straight repeal would be the preferred option and called for the advice of the Attorney General to be published in full.
Teachta O’Reilly said:
“The eighth amendment must go and Sinn Féin is ready for this repeal campaign.
“We welcome the clarity provided today by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and look forward to campaigning alongside all those who believe that change is necessary.
“We maintain that a straight repeal of the eighth amendment would be the best course of action as laid out by the Oireachtas Committee. It is our strong view that the constitution was never the appropriate place to address issues of women’s health.
“I have written to the Minister for Health requesting that the advice of the Attorney General be made public and that all parties are briefed in full on its content.
“In any case, this announcement must be viewed as progress. It has been a long road to get us to where we are and the journey is not over yet.
“The eighth amendment must be repealed. Compassion and trust in women must prevail.”
