Launch of Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign a positive for health of women and children - Gildernew
Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has said that today’s launch of the reinstated Public Health Authority (PHA) breastfeeding awareness campaign will have a ‘positive impact on health of women and children’.
The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP, who lobbied for the programme to be reinstated following a funding cut last year, said:
“Today’s launch of the PHA breastfeeding awareness campaign is a welcome reinstatement of a programme designed to encourage breastfeeding.
“This island of Ireland has the lowest rate of breastfeeding in the EU, so there is a clear need to promote the many significant health and social benefits from breastfeeding that exist for a mother and her child.
"As a society we must break the stigma surrounding breastfeeding, and promote it as a natural and healthy facet of child-rearing.
“I have engaged with the Department of Health on a regular basis to make the case for reviving the PHA public information campaign and I am delighted that the Department and PHA will today launch the reinstated program."
