No water charges through the backdoor- Eoin Ó Broin TD

13 February, 2018 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Water Eoin Ó Broin TD has again stated that any attempt to introduce domestic water charges by the back door will face stiff public opposition.

Responding to the publication of the Irish Water Charges Plan by the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) Deputy Ó Broin said:

“The CRU has published its timeline for the introduction of a so called excess charge for domestic water customers. It has confirmed that Bills for excess use charges will start being issued to customers from 1st July 2019 at the earliest.

“Minister Murphy must now bring forward at the earliest possible opportunity what rules and processes will underpin his plans for an excess use charging regime.

“He must also ensure that the article 9.4 exemption under the Water Framework Directive is retained under the new River basin Management Plan currently being drafted by the government.

“Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael may think that the water charges battle is over. It is not and any attempt by them to introduce water charges by the back door will be vigorously opposed by Sinn Féin in the Oireachtas and by Right2Water campaigners in the streets.”
