British government should admit Brexit damage in Ireland – Hazzard

14 February, 2018 - by Chris Hazzard

Chris Hazzard MP today said the British government have a responsibility to come clean on the economic damage Brexit will cause across the island of Ireland.

The South Down MP was speaking following a closed reading session in Westminster of the British government’s Brexit Impact Assessments which they refuse to release to their own people.

Chris Hazzard MP said:

“Today I travelled to Westminster to read the British government’s Brexit Impact Assessments.

“I have always believed that Brexit can only bring disastrous economic consequences for the island of Ireland. That remains my very firm view today.

“The content of these papers has already been widely leaked but the Irish and British people have a right to know the content of these assessments. They should be released immediately by the British government.

“In Ireland civic society, trade unions and the business community understand the damage Brexit will have on our rights and livelihoods.

“We need Designated Special Status within the EU, retaining our membership of the Single Market and Customs Union, to protect communities and businesses from the British government’s Brexit disaster."
