Nolan quizzes Taoiseach on teacher pay equality

14 February, 2018

Today in the Dáil under questions on Promised Legislation, Sinn Féin TD Carol Nolan asked the Taoiseach if he had advanced his commitments on Teacher Pay Equality.

Deputy Nolan reminded the Taoiseach of the injustice of the current situation, saying that legislation passed in December 2017 provided for a Report to be commissioned within three months, which would put before the Oireachtas a detailed cost and implementation plan for pay equalisation.

Deputy Nolan said:

“It is very unfair that post-2011 entrants to the profession, experience career loss earnings in a range from €53,000 to €105,000.  This ongoing issue has had a serious impact on the recruitment, retention and morale of teachers.  The teaching profession is being greatly devalued by the ongoing issue of pay inequality.”

Deputy Nolan pressed the Taoiseach for an update on the Report and asked him if it will be published on time and if there will be an opportunity for debate.  The Taoiseach indicated that whilst he does not have an update on the Report an engagement is due to take place with the Unions.
