Pearse Doherty TD welcomes support for Bill imposing jail sentences for lying to Central Bank

14 February, 2018 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty has welcomed the all-party support for his Central Bank (Amendment) Bill which imposes jail sentences of up to 5 years for any banker found to have lied to the Central Bank.

Deputy Doherty said:

“I am very happy that this piece of legislation has won all-party support. It is an important message to send out that all parties are supporting a law that could see bankers jailed if they lie to the Central Bank.

"Sinn Féin is determined that the law will be changed, not just today in this small way, but in a wider way so that a crook in a suit is treated no differently than any other crook.

"Seven years of Fine Gael led government's and nothing has been done to hold individuals accountable for wrecking the country, no new laws to tackle white collar crime.

"Ideologically this is not a battle Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil have the nerve for.

"It is Sinn Féin that abolished the six year rule so that thousands could make a complaint to the Financial service ombudsman against the banks.

"It was Sinn Féin that tabled legislation to allow victims work together in Class Action Suits. That Bill is progressing despite government opposition.

"This Bill passed when passed needs no be seen as part of a suite of laws that change the culture from one of tolerance of white collar crime as somehow acceptable to a culture where crime is treated seriously no matter who carries it out.”
