Flynn welcomes procurement of specialist equipment for mesh injury diagnosis
Sinn Féin MLA Órailthí Flynn has welcomed confirmation from the Public Health Agency that the Belfast Trust are in the process of procuring 3D scanning equipment for use in cases of mesh injury.
The party’s health spokesperson said:
“I welcome the news that the Belfast Trust are in the process of procuring 3D scanning equipment in cases of mesh injury, with 2D equipment being used in the interim.
“My party colleague Caoimhe Archibald and I have worked tirelessly alongside the women who have been injured by mesh to make the case for 3D scans to be made available for medical practitioners to locate and examine mesh injuries.
"We have been in continuous engagement with the women affected and the Department of Health and we are glad the department has begun to take the necessary steps to provide these women with the treatment and support they require.
“The Department must continue to listen to and act in the interests of these brave women and it is important that measures are put in place to ensure that women are protected from future mesh injuries.
“Sinn Féin welcome the news that there is to be a review of mesh in England. We have consistently campaigned for a local public inquiry into the of vaginal mesh and we are calling for a ban on the use of vaginal mesh implants.”
