Transformation of Health and Social Care key to tackling growing waiting lists - Sheehan
Sinn Féin's Pat Sheehan has said that growing waiting lists need to be tackled through sufficiently funded transformation as envisaged by Michelle O'Neill in her Delivering Together plan which received cross party support.
Speaking after the publication of the north's most recent quarterly waiting times statistics today the Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Health said:
"Growing waiting lists faced by patients in the north are not acceptable and need to be tackled through the transformation of Health and Social Care.
"This includes investing in primary care to increase the capacity of GPs and others in delivering procedures in the community, providing better patient experiences.
"An increased role for primary care would also avoid additional pressures on hospitals.”
Commenting on DoH's publication today of a progress report on the Elective Care Plan launched by Michelle O'Neill, Mr Sheehan added:
"It is important that work is ongoing in the Department of Health in developing approaches to tackling waiting lists.
"The causes of excessive waiting times need to be addressed-not just the symptoms.
"This requires additional funding.
"Continued DUP backed Tory austerity will only undermines efforts to transform health and fail to address excessive waiting lists."
