‘Undemocratic to deny vote to 16-year-olds’ - Dolan
It is undemocratic to deny young people the vote when they are forced to live with the consequences of decisions such as Brexit, Sinn Féin MLA Jemma Dolan has said.
Addressing a Youth Forum debate in Stormont today, the Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA commented: “The Tory Government denied 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote in the Brexit Referendum yet young people are living with the long term consequences of Brexit.
“Young people aged 18-24 years old overwhelmingly voted to remain in the EU and surveys have shown that 16-17 year olds held similar views.
“There is no stronger example of younger people being forced to live under conditions directed by older voters than Brexit. It is sad to say that young people here are being forced to leave the European Union against the democratic wishes of local people and at the wishes of older people largely resident in England. This is not democracy.”
