Ó Donnghaile welcomes official status for Irish speaking areas in the North
Sinn Féin Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed the announcement that Irish speaking areas in the North are set to receive official status for first time.
Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile was speaking after Belfast and Carntogher in Derry were named among five areas across Ireland to apply for formal status as Irish language network communities.
“This will be the first time that an Irish speaking community outside of the South’s Gaeltacht areas will have official recognition,” Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile said.
“The amount of people choosing to learn Irish or speak Irish in the north is continuing to grow and these communities have provided an invaluable contribution to the promotion and protection of the language and culture.
“This recognition is another achievement that the Irish Language speakers in the North should be proud of.
“Now is the time to legally protect the Irish language through the introduction of an Acht Gaeilge.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
