McDonald welcomes confirmation that US will appoint an Envoy to Ireland
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has welcomed the confirmation by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that an Envoy will be appointed to Ireland.
Teachta McDonald said:
“I welcome Secretary Tillerson’s statement that an Envoy will be appointed to Ireland.
“The challenges that we in Ireland presently face, the rejection of an agreement to restore the power sharing government at Stormont, the refusal to implement previous agreements, and the consequences of Brexit for the whole island, are very real.
“The appointment of an Envoy reflects the positive role that America has played in the peace process. This is particularly significant as the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement approaches.
“I would like to thank the bipartisan Friends of Ireland Caucus and the Irish American organisations for their successful efforts in this achievement.
“I look forward to discussing the current situation with political and civic leaders when I visit America for the St Patrick’s day celebrations.”
