Forward movement on Sirocco site welcomed - Cllr O'Donnell
Sinn Féin East Belfast councillor Mairead O'Donnell has welcomed the movement of the development of the Sirocco site stating that it has massive potential and that the site has lain derelict for too long.
Speaking earlier Cllr O'Donnell said:
"Todays announcement that Swinford (Sirocco) Ltd have submitted a planning application for part of the site is to be welcomed.
"The site formerly occupied by the Sirocco factory has laid empty and derelict for over ten years and has passed through previous ownerships with much promise but unfortunately no delivery.
"It is a site with massive potential to transform this part of the city and deliver investment in jobs, leisure and housing.
"I have been engaging with the Swinford group since they acquired the site with the focus being primarily on the delivery of social housing units.
"I am content to this point that that engagement has been useful and constructive, and that while today’s announcement concerns plans for office space, that the next phase will focus on residential development including social housing units.
"I believe there exists an excellent opportunity for the developers to find a balance between city centre living and commerce. I want to see Sirocco site and indeed the city develop in a way which is good for our residents and communities.
"Inclusive growth is a cornerstone to our Belfast Agenda and we have to ensure we grow our economy in an inclusive way that tackles the inequalities that exist such as housing and low wages and we want to encourage investment that does this."
