Glib Johnson conveys Tory ignorance of Irish border issue - David Cullinane TD

27 February, 2018 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin Brexit spokesperson David Cullinane TD has said today that Boris Johnson's attempt to compare the Irish border issue to a city congestion charge was crass and stupid and one that seriously questions the intellectual abilities of the British Foreign Minister in his current portfolio.

Deputy Cullinane said:

"I would suspect that a basic knowledge of geography and borders would be a requirement of a foreign minister but it appears the Tory party has other ideas.

"Boris Johnson's comments today, comparing the Irish border issue to that of the London congestion charge, are so devoid of actual intelligence as to give a brain freeze to those unfortunate enough to hear them.

"This is a man whose main skill seems to be waving flags while wearing a hard hat and suspended 50 feet in the air.

"Lest there be any doubt, the Irish border issue post-brexit is not the same as a city congestion charge.

"The millions of euro in goods and services that move between Camden and Westminster are not stopped and checked for compliance with rules, regulations, standards and tariffs.

"A resident in Camden does not need a permit to work in Westminster.

"One really has to question the intellect of a man who sees the world through such eyes.

"Tomorrow will see the release of the EU Commission's draft legal text for the withdrawal agreement with Britain.

"I suspect it will not have much in it on congestion charges.

"The reality is that the prospect of a hard border on the island of Ireland is a real concern.

"Boris Johnson needs to start taking it with the seriousness his office demands."
