EU complicit in Israeli human rights violations - Lynn Boylan MEP

28 February, 2018 - by Lynn Boylan MEP

Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan has slammed the EU for its complicity in Israeli illegal settlements and human rights violations.

Speaking from Brussels, MS Boylan said;

"Today I attended a meeting with Omar Barghouti, co-founder of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

"Israel has brutalised, killed and repressed occupied Palestinians with near impunity for years. They starve public investment in occupied territory, demolish Palestinian homes and arrest children in an attempt to deprave Palestinians of their capital city and country.

"The EU has for too long placed Israel on a pedestal, while taking no practical measures that would ensure that Israel is held accountable for its actions.

"Through its inaction against Israel, the EU has in fact become complicit in the Israeli occupation of Palestine, with the EASTMED pipeline being the latest example of how the EU is now not only ignoring but is actively playing a role in the aggression.

"This gas pipeline between Israel and the southern Mediterranean will involve the pillaging of Palestinian natural resources.

"It is unacceptable that the EU has done nothing to prevent Israel from continuing to displace Palestinian’s from their homes and to profit from stolen Palestinian resources.

"The BDS campaign is perhaps, now more than ever, a means to challenge and end Israeli violations of Palestinian human rights and international law.

"The international community needs to stand up to Israel and demand it abandons its settlement of occupied territory and end coercive acts violence and repression towards the Palestinian people."
