Opportunities from automation should be exploited to enhance economic development - Archibald
Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald has said opportunities from automation must be exploited to enhance economic development.
Speaking after attending the Future of Work Solutions Summit in the Belfast Waterfront today, the East Derry MLA said:
"Advancements in technology and automation have been rapid over recent years and will continue to develop in the immediate and longer term.
"It is important that this is embraced to enhance economic development. Businesses and organisations must be equipped to take on the opportunities which arise from automation and also become more aware of how this can benefit them.
"A change of culture to recognise the importance of skills, including soft skills like people management and teamwork, over more technical activities and the completion of tasks in the workplace, is necessary.
"Automation can offer companies the opportunity to utilise staff time for activity which adds value to their products and services.
"To fully benefit from the opportunities of automation, an adequately skilled workforce is necessary.
"This means investing in training and upskilling of employees and ensuring the curriculum, in schools and in further and higher education, is responsive to the changing demands of the economy."
