Electricity and Gas suppliers must facilitate ‘Pay as You Go’ customers during the freeze - Brian Stanley TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Brian Stanley TD, is calling on all the main suppliers of electricity and gas to provide a continuous  supply to their ‘Pay As You Go’ customers during the spell of weather, regardless of whether they have credit for their meters.

Teachta Stanley said:

"During this period of bitterly cold weather it is vital that these householders, many of whom are vulnerable and on low incomes, are helped by suppliers.

"Many will rely on going to the shop to top up their gas and/or electricity meter. However, with shops closed in most parts of the country they may be left without power and heat.

"Some of those on the lowest incomes may run out of money to buy credit and it is important that they are not left without heat.

The emergency periods, evenings and weekends, where meters cannot switch off, would obviously not include today or yesterday.

"It is essential now that all suppliers with ‘Pay As You Go’ customers facilitate them to help keep the lights and heat on and I am calling on them to do so."
