Irish Government Must Not Allow Backstop Deal to be Side-Lined – David Cullinane TD

2 March, 2018 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Brexit David Cullinane TD has said today that the Taoiseach and Minister Coveney must insist that Britain commits itself to the backstop arrangement, adding that it cannot be allowed to be side-lined during the wider trade talks.

Deputy Cullinane said:

“The British Prime Minister has once again confirmed that Britain will be leaving the customs union and single market.

“This makes the backstop arrangement for the North all that more essential.

“Theresa May, however, has today rejected that arrangement with her insistence that there will be no border checks between the North and Britain.

"We are in danger of slipping into a hard Brexit, one that will affect east-west trade and according to Donald Tusk will see a border on the island of Ireland.

“It remains to be seen whether the Irish Government will insist on Britain’s legal compliance to the backstop arrangement before moving on to full trade negotiations.

“If they do not, it will be a rejection of the vote of the people of the North to remain within the EU, as well as a tacit acceptance that there will be a border on the island of Ireland post-Brexit.

“This must not be allowed to happen.

“The people of the north will not be a bargaining chip for either Britain or the EU.

“The Taoiseach and Minister Coveney must insist that the backstop arrangement is not side-lined as an inconvenience to wider trade talks."
