Kearney writes to airport owners about DUP fundraiser reports
South Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney has written to both the management, and United States-based owners, of Belfast International Airport following reports that the Airport provided financial sponsorship to a DUP fund raising dinner last week.
Speaking today the Party National Chairperson said:
"Since voicing my concerns about the reported sponsorship of a DUP gala dinner in Ballymena by Belfast International Airport I have now contacted its management and posed a wide range of questions.
"This is now an issue of significant public interest. Questions arise about the judgement of Belfast International Airport corporate management, and also the relationship between the airport and the DUP.
"Belfast International Airport is an essential component of our regional and local economic infrastructure. It serves all sections of the community, and in turn relies upon their custom and business. So there are potential issues of commercial reputation now at stake.
"I believe that Belfast International Airport customers, employees as well as the general public who are from all sections of the community are entitled to be provided with answers to the queries posed by me.
"I have also written directly to President of Airports Worldwide Larry Gouldthorpe and brought this situation to their attention.
"I have asked Airports Worldwide to clarify if it considers the judgement of the Belfast International Airport management in this specific situation to be consistent with the global corporate values and ethics of Airports Worldwide given the DUP’s opposition to rights for the LGBT community, Irish language speakers and families waiting on a coroner’s inquest.”
