TAMS technical specifications must take climate change conditions into account - Martin Kenny TD

5 March, 2018 - by Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture, Martin Kenny TD, said today that he is concerned about the technical specifications for TAMS (Targeted Agricultural Modernisaton Scheme) have proven not to be able to withstand extreme weather conditions in some parts of the country.

Deputy Kenny said:

“Reports today from the South East show that some sheds, built to TAMS specifications, were not able to withstand the recent snow storms. In some cases the roof collapsed, endangering livestock and people tending them.

“While this particular episode was extreme, we are experiencing storms, flooding and snow more frequently and predictions are that these conditions are  likely to continue.

“While it would be unrealistic to suggest that every grant-aided farm structure should be able to withstand the most extreme weather conditions, maybe it is time for an update of  technical specifications to ensure that current climate change concerns are taken into account, especially in areas of the country where extreme weather episodes have recurred in recent years.”
