Sinn Féin Chairperson to update Irish Americans on current political crises
Sinn Féin National Chairperson, Declan Kearney MLA, will update Irish Americans in California on the political crisis in the north of Ireland, during a three-day tour of engagements with Irish American civic society.
Speaking ahead of the tour, the South Antrim MLA said:
"The role of Irish America has been, and remains, pivotal in influencing political events in Ireland. Indeed, Irish Americans played a key role in the run-up to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.
“Now, at a time when the Good Friday Agreement is under attack from unionist and Brexit extremists, Irish America has a similar responsibility to act in defence of the Good Friday Agreement and the demand for basic rights in the north of Ireland.
“During this visit I will outline the context of the current crisis at a private briefing to Irish Americans in the Irish Cultural Centre in San Francisco.
“Over the following days I will also be meeting with the Governor of California, Jerry Brown, the Irish American legislative Caucus and the Mayor of San Francisco, Mark Farrell.
“Civic society in Ireland has mobilised in recent months to demand rights and protections for citizens in the north including the LGBT and Irish language communities. They have raised their voice to highlight the danger that Brexit poses to the Irish political process and the Good Friday Agreement.
“Irish America can add its weight to the campaign for an end to the denial of basic human and civil rights in Ireland, by organising and mobilising its influence in defence of the Good Friday Agreement.”
