Sinn Féin publishes Dáil motion to disband Strategic Communications Unit - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane has today published his party’s Private Members’ Motion to disband the Government’s Strategic Communications Unit.
The motion also calls on An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to appear before the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee alongside senior civil servant Martin Fraser and head of the Strategic Communications Unit John Concannon to account for the spending of public monies by the Strategic Communications Unit.
The motion is due for debate in the Dáil on Wednesday March 21st.
Speaking today Deputy Cullinane said;
“The Strategic Communications Unit has been revealed to be a highly expensive PR Unit for the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Fine Gael at the expense of the taxpayer.
“This is unacceptable and that is why we have tabled this motion to have the unit disbanded.
“We are also calling for An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, senior civil servant Martin Fraser and head of the Strategic Communication Unit John Concannon to appear before the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee to account for the public monies spent by the Strategic Communications Unit.”

That Dáil Éireann calls for:
- The immediate disbandment of the Strategic Communications Unit;
- An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar; the Secretary General of the Department of an Taoiseach Martin Fraser; the head of the Strategic Communications Unit John Concannon; and any other relevant individuals to appear before the Public Accounts Committee at the earliest possible date to account for the spending of public monies by the Strategic Communications Unit;
- The establishment of an independent panel, appointed by the Oireachtas, to examine the most effective way of operating Government communications to ensure value for money and freedom from political interference.
