EU guidelines a 'shot of reality' for May’s government – David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Brexit, David Cullinane TD, said today that the austere approach to trade as outlined by the EU guidelines released today show that the days of the Tories proclaiming they can have their cake and eat it, are well and truly over.
Deputy Cullinane said:
"Sinn Féin welcomes the EU guidelines released today. Any trade deal done must only come into effect when the British government commit to ensure that there will be no hardening of the border.
“What was agreed in December, and provided in the treaty, must be enacted.
"They once again call on the British government to outline its proposals to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.
"It is not enough for Theresa May to reject the EU draft legal agreement, as well as call out for special status for the north, while maintaining she wants to avoid a border.
"The ball is firmly in the court of the faction-ridden Tories.
"The Taoiseach and Minister Coveney must insist that the backstop arrangement is not side-lined as an inconvenience to wider trade talks.
"The Taoiseach must raise directly with British Prime Minister Theresa May her responsibility to ensure that are no barriers to trade between the North of Ireland and Britain, when Britain exits the European Union.
"The British government has responsibility to ensure the North also retains full access to the EU market.
"The only group threatening to block trade from the North to Britain is the British government.”
