EU guidelines show May's approach is nonsense - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said there is an onus on the British government to come up with proposals following the publication of EU negotiating guidelines today.
Speaking following the publication of the latest guidelines on Brexit negotiations by the EU, Martina Anderson said:
"The guidelines published today by the Council EU are welcome and clearly state the need for all agreements and commitments entered into up to this point to be respected.
"It clearly shows that what the British government have been saying about leaving the single market and customs union yet still continuing to enjoy the same trading relationship with the EU is nonsense.
"Theresa May and the Brexiteers in the Tory cabinet, as well as their allies in the DUP, need to take account of these guidelines and reflect on their position.
"The British government now needs to come up with serious and workable proposals for the first time. The ball is in their court.
"The Taoiseach and the Irish government too must work to ensure the north remains in the customs union and single market and that the backstop agreement contained in the draft treaty is protected."
