RTÉ has questions to answer on funding and employment practices – Cullinane
Sinn Féin member of the Public Accounts Committee David Cullinane TD today welcomed that the committee is to write to RTÉ to ask it to appear in session, adding that there are value for money and employment practices issues that need to be addressed.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“I am pleased to say that the PAC has agreed to my request that we write to RTÉ and ask it to appear before the committee.
“The Committee had a situation where the Department of Communications, despite handing over millions in funding to RTÉ, was not able to discuss the oversight of those funds with the PAC.
“There does not seem to be any way for us to examine how that money is spent.
“I acknowledge that the case of RTÉ is a bit more complicated because it is a public service organisation but it is still a significant amount of money and the Accounting Officer was only able to tell us that a cheque for €170 million is signed and that is about it.
“That is not appropriate.
“Similarly, we have received reports of what may be bogus self-employment in RTÉ.
“The national broadcaster has questions to answer here and I hope it accedes to our request to appear before the Committee in the interest of genuine public oversight and accountability.”
