Dessie Ellis TD raises need to tackle grooming of children by drug couriers
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Drug and Alcohol Abuse Dessie Ellis TD has said that there is a gap in the current legislation around drugs when dealing with those who exploit children as drugs couriers and other illegal activities.
Deputy Ellis said;
“This morning in the Dail I raised with the Táinaiste the issue of grooming of children by drug dealers.
"It should be made an offence for someone to groom children for the purpose of selling or carrying drugs.
"I am increasingly hearing that in certain areas of Dublin, children are being used as drug couriers by drug dealers and this is causing great concern for families in these areas.
"This is child exploitation at its worst. They know that children will be attracted by the false glamour and material wealth of drug dealers and are more vulnerable to being exploited.
"For drug dealers, children are cheap, expendable, easily controlled, and are often able to operate beneath the radar of An Garda Síochána.
"We need a system in place that can deal with child victims who have also become offenders.
"We need to urgently plug the gap in current legislation and criminalize this new form of child abuse and child exploitation.”
