Ennis urges public to stay in control of their gambling
Sinn Féin MLA Sinéad Ennis has stressed the importance to the public of staying in control of their gambling.
Speaking as the Cheltenham Festival started today the party’s sports, art and culture spokesperson said:
“Today marks the start of the Cheltenham Festival. The race meeting will be enjoyed by the hundreds of thousands who will visit the course and the millions that will watch it on television.
"As one of the biggest horse racing events of the year it will undoubtedly draw many people to place a bet. For many the thrill of watching their horse run, and hopefully win, will be its own reward.
"However, there are those within our society to whom gambling is an addiction. In that sense this week could be an extremely dangerous week where they could cause not only harm to themselves but also their loved ones.
"I would urge people to be cautious of their gambling, it is important to be alert and know when to stop.
“There is help out there for anyone who is struggling or feels they could be struggling with a gambling addiction and it is vital that they can access the services they require.
“It is equally important to ensure that education and appropriate preventive steps are taken to protect younger people from falling victim to destructive addiction of any kind.”
