‘Conversion therapies’ should be a banned - Rogan

14 March, 2018 - by Emma Rogan

South Down MLA Emma Rogan has said ‘conversion therapies’ should be a banned.

Emma Rogan was speaking after attending a protest against the screening of a documentary on how to 'cure homosexuality’ which was being shown in the Baptist Church in Ballynahinch.

“Sinn Féin will continue stand alongside the LGB and T communities.

“There is nothing wrong with being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender and Sinn Féin totally oppose the use of ‘therapies’ which are aimed to change, repress and, or eliminate a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity and, or gender expression,” she said.

“These ‘therapies’ are damaging, extremely dangerous and can have a very damaging psychological effect on people.

"The practice of conversion therapy has been condemned and discredited worldwide by institutions such as the UN Committee Against Torture, the European Parliament and by the Irish Council for Psychotherapy.

“Today my party colleague Seanadóir Fintan Warfield, launched the Prohibition of Conversion Therapies Bill 2018 in the South.

“Sinn Féin believe that ‘conversion therapies’ should be a banned throughout Ireland.”
